Nokia Fugue

Op. 31

Download score

I composed this fugue as a personal exercise to see how I can compose a contrapuntal work with an existing melody. The Nokia Ringtone had already become quite well known by 2008, so I thought it would make a good subject for a fugue if I wanted to engage the general public. (Francisco Tarrega composed Gran Vals, which is where this musical fragment originates from.) To my surprise, this is now the most popular video on my channel. The structure of this fugue is quite loose, but it demonstrates various techniques like the stretto, melodic inversion, and so forth. Through the years, it has been featured in various publications and used as teaching aids worldwide.
